PROJECT 1

Fig 1.4 - Infographic Poster Sketch (Draft)
After having a layout in mind for the recipe, I went on to create the assets needed in Adobe Illustrator by creating vector ingredients and utensils using the pen tool. Each "mini-recipes" were divided into their own individual chunks so that I know which group of assets belong to when making the final infographic.

PROJECT 1
Instructable Infographics Poster (15%)
This is an individual project about creating a poster. Firstly, a video of our choice is selected from Pasta Grannies' YouTube channel, then we break down the video into steps for a recipe. That information is then conveyed through a poster format to give step-by-step process of how the dish is made.
I started browsing through the videos and clicking on food recipes that I find interesting such as ravioli and lasagna. Unfortunately, what made the search difficult was these videos didn't fully specify the steps they took, nor the amount of flour in grams they used to make dough for example. This to me wouldn't make for an accurate infographic, so I decided to find one that fits the criteria I'm looking for, being clear and precise with their instructions. Eventually, I found a video about how to make the perfect cannelloli by Carla Tomasi.

After several viewings of the video, I wrote down the steps for the
recipe in detail on a piece of paper. It was worrying at first as this
video contains 3 different "mini-recipes", in which combines into the
final recipe in the end. Thus, I tried my best to breakdown and minimize
the information to the essentials.

Seeing that I have a bunch of information, I decided to divide it into
chunks so that it can be easily understood.

After creating the assets, I can finally assemble it into one
big poster. I followed the layout I have in my sketch but
resized certain elements to make it fit in without obstructing
other elements in the process. A few things I have to look out
for is the size of the poster, and how to manipulate elements
so that it can fit in the required size, while also achieving
the look I was going for.

Lastly, text was added and the infographic is complete.

Animated Infographic (5%)
This is a follow-up task for this project where we transform our static infographic into a motion graphics video animation showcasing the steps taken by the recipe via the use of After Effects.
From previous lessons about vector animation, I tried importing the Illustrator file I had in Fig 1.5 into After Effects and animate as that how it should go. For some reason, I ran into a problem where I could only view content from one artboard. I thought back and realized that the vector animation lesson was also done in one artboard, so I compiled all of the illustrations into one artboard, with the artboard being the required size for the motion graphics video of 720p: 1280x720 resolution.

Using this method, it fixed the problem I had and all
I had to do was resize the elements to suit the
margins of the video animation.

I arranged the duration each element appears on
the timeline as well as using transformations of
the vectors such as Position, Scale, Rotation
and Opacity to create the animation in the
video. The layout of the information presented
in the animation is done in easy small chunks
for each step as I want the viewers to be
constantly engaged in the animation and be able
to absorb it in a steady manner.
Project 1 for Information Design has been my first exposure to create minute-long animations. In the past, I've only done small animations in After Effects that goes up to 5 seconds max. This was a big learning experience to illustrate multiple assets and animating multiple elements in After Effects. Figuring out the layout of the poster was a serious challenge as having too much information can be daunting, but slowly ensuring a layout is satisfying and rewarding, being able to fit an abundance of information into a limited space. As this was my first long-term animating experience, there are inevitably some areas that I see could improve. These experiences help increase my total experience with the software so that I can utilize them in the next animation project.
