REFLECTIONS
Experience
Typography has been a unique journey, an arduous but important one. The tasks requires an abundance of practice and trial and error to perfect the work to the highest quality. Typography has taught me to pay attention to the smaller, finer details. Not every work of design needs to be flashy and expressive as something simple may have a stronger effect. It has also taught me to be more disciplined as there are certain rules to follow to have a consistent design.
Observations
After learning about typography, I find myself naturally looking at and analyzing the typeface of store names at shopping malls or online. A year ago, I would only notice flashy fonts or unique expression of letters but now I start to notice the minor features of the typeface and the effect it can bring from reading it. Now, those flashy fonts I thought looked good probably wouldn't fly in the world of typography while the simpler ones I tend to overlook, I give them a second glance and realize there's much more work and effort put into it in terms of consistency, expression and legibility.
Findings
Typography was more structured than I thought. There can be free-flow in expression of words or letters but even type expression, layout design and font design have a specific structure, a set of rules to follow to ensure that the work created is of utmost quality and consistency. I thought fonts were created from the drawing designs of people, which is true to an extent. What I did not know was there is much more to the process of creating a font, having consistent features expressed throughout each letter, making sure it is readable by adjusting its kerning and letterspacing and ensuring that it brings out the desired expression the designer wishes to express.
