INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2: Production Shoot

During Week 5, we were introduced with a lecture of how filmmakers shoot clips for their movies and this exercise aims to give us the authentic experience in that field. We broke down our groups into multiple roles such as Producer, Directors, Assistant Directors, Art Director, Director of Photography, Camera Assistant, Location Sound, Boom Operator and Actors.

Fig 1.1 - Crew list

We were arranged into a group with our roles distributed among us. I was the producer for this production shoot and my job is to ensure the crew members understands their tasks, supervise the crew during the production shoot day while helping or taking over certain roles whenever needed, as well as providing set props and finding locations required for the shoot.

We were assigned a short movie clip to act as a guideline for us when shooting our version for this production shoot. The movie clip is called Silent (2022) and here is the small clip we were given.

Fig 1.2 - Silent (2022) clip

To begin, I deducted that 3 locations were needed for this production shoot. The staircase, a park and a dark room is needed and thus the staircase outside Photography Studio, the nature area near the lake and a setting inside the Photography Studio was selected for this production shoot. Additionally, we decided to have our on twist on the drama to make it somewhat comical by having a Doge as the gift used in the movie clip.

Behind the scenes: Images and Videos

The production shoot was done on one Tuesday during Week 7 as that was our stipulated time period. We altered some elements to the production shoot by having some extra shots or different shots to experiment with different angles.  Afterwards, the post-production begins in editing on Premiere Pro.

Fig 1.3 - Arranging sequence and trimming

The visual and audio files were arranged and placed onto a new sequence in Premiere Pro. This process took a while as the files were not named. After arranging the sequence down, I overlap the audio files recorded with the ones recorded on the mic and timed it so the audio matches the visual.

Fig 1.4 - DeNoise Effect

The ambient sound from the audio was still quite loud and interrupting, so I used the DeNoise effect under Effects tab to tone down the ambient sounds. The Amount value sounded good at 70% which took a few tries to find it as I want to lower the background noise but to not affect the actor's voice too much.

Fig 1.5 - Color Correction

The Lumetri Color effect was used to do color correction on the clip. This is done to balance out the light and shadow levels of the clip as well as match the colors of a clip with other clips.

Fig 1.6 - Amplify Effect

The audio for this clip was noticeably soft when compared to the other clips in the sequence. Thus, I applied the Amplify effect on the clip and adjusted the decibels until it sounded ideal.

Fig 1.7 - Transition Effect

I needed a transition effect so I played around with the presets available and found VR Light Leaks transition under Video Transitions > Immersive Video. After applying the effect, the transition does not look as smooth so I edited the preset values manually and played around with values such as Horizontal and Vertical Field of View, Leak Spectrum Width, Leak Exposure, Leak Intensity and Dissolve Length. The values were adjusted and tested for each iteration until I managed to create one where I was satisfied with.

Fig 1.8 - Fade Out effects

For simpler transitions on the visuals and audio, I used the Cross Dissolve effect to smoothly fade out the visual clip while Constant Gain was used to fade out the audio levels near the end.

Project 2: Tiktok

We are tasked to create a Tiktok that tells something about you, which is required to be filmed during campus. I decided to go with a skit idea that comes from one of the many scenarios I randomly think of while at campus.

Fig 2.0 - Tiktok Ideation

I proceeded with shooting my Tiktok video around campus, taking note of the previous lessons to use different angles such as closeup, medium wide shot, wide angle shot and so on. After accumulating all the files, I went into post-production in Premiere Pro.

Fig 2.1- Arranging Sequence

I numbered the files in terms of sequence so that it is easy for me when I import the files onto the track. The clips are trimmed on the start and end to remove the audio of camera rolling and cut.

Fig 2.2 - Transition and Sound Effects

The transitions were added through the Effect Presets under Effects > Video Transitions on the top right of the workspace. These transitions are repeated throughout the sequence, using effects such as Cross Dissolve, Wipe and Slide. Additionally, I used some copyright free sound effect from YouTube and timed it to appear at the desired moment along the sequence.

Fig 2.3 - Audio Transitions

The exponential fade audio transition effect was used at the start of the chase music audio clip. This gives it the buildup it needs to blend into the scene instead of sound loud abruptly at the start.

Fig 2.4 - Parametric Equalizer Effect

This effect was used because I wanted to shape my voice to sound like a narrator. I learnt the basics from a tutorial guide on YouTube first, then I tweaked some values up and down for my own audio until I manage to get a desired outcome.

Fig 2.5 - Convolution Reverb

For this section of the clip, I wanted the audio to sound like the voice you would hear in your head. Thus, I used convolution reverb in order to differentiate how my voice sounds compared to the other clips. The preset of Memory Space was chosen as it sounded the closest to what I wanted, to which I tweak some values manually until it achieved the result I desired.
