INSTRUCTIONS

Kinetic Typography (10%)

This is a group project and we are tasked to create kinetic typography using a song of our choice. After Effects is used for the animation of the lyrics. After a voting session, the song choice we had was Changes by Hayd.

After selecting the song, we decide to split the sections of the song into chunks for each member to animate. We used Google Sheets for this process, color coding our parts to make it easy to distinguish, with repeated lyrics only need to be done once usually for efficiency.

After breaking down the lyrics, we decided which font style we should use to animate.  We went with Sadhise and Marydale Regular as our font choices.

I animated my section of the lyrics in After Effects. The lyrics come into order by adjusting its duration on the timeline, while using tools such as Position, Opacity and transition effects and presets to create the animation plan I had in mind.

Since I was group leader for the group projects in this module, I was tasked with compiling everyone's works into one big After Effects file. It was difficult as my laptop is not able to handle the insane chunks of files I'm importing into it, but eventually the work is compiled and ready to be transformed into video.

Animation Chart/Graph (5%)

In week 3, we learned how to create simple motion graphics animations for pie, bar and line charts and graphs. This was an individual project and I was assigned with creating a line graph animation.

Vector Animation (5%)

In week 4, we learned how to create simple vector animation by first creating the assets in Adobe Illustrator before transferring them to After Effects. This exercise is extremely helpful for creating the motion graphics animation for Instructable Infograhpics (Project 1) later on. In this case, we already had a pre-determined Illustrator file for us to use. I got assigned with file D so that's what I had to work with for this exercise.

The assets came together in one big group so I had to separate each object I want to animate into its individual layer. This ensures that the object itself can be animated in After Effects when transferring.

Fig 1.10 - Keyframe editing

Using tools such as position and scale, I edited the keyframe and also creating a "bounce" effect by making the position be a bit more than its final destination, before moving it back to it.  The common position, scale and opacity tools were used for this edit.

REFLECTION

This group project for kinetic typography has been a stressful one as it was a rush near the end when compiling everyone's After Effects file into one singular file for rendering the full video animation. The issues I faced was members not submitting their work on time. Due to this, I have tried communicating with other members about the issue as we constantly ask our members that are falling behind to see if they are doing okay, but communication is unresponsive. In the end, two other group members (bless them) and me had to do extra touches and final refinements of the video, working extra time and portion to cover the ones my unresponsive groupmates submitted. Through this experience, I learned to be more active and precise with my leadership, giving them multiple chances of submission by planning certain days required for them to submit, along with a few days after a set date as a plan B. I also have plans for a plan C just in case they didn't submit the work, we as a group have to work around the obstacles we have in order to accomplish the goals of this project.

The mini exercises for line graph animation and vector animation was a fun experience as it is simple to do, but that makes me want to put way more effort into it to make it as creative as possible. Creating the vector animation was extremely helpful too as that sets up the basic knowledge I need to know when creating the animation for Instructable Infographics in Project 1.
